When Tess Durbeyfield, a poor, young woman, takes service in the house of the D'Urbervilles, she is seduced and ruined by Alec, the son of the house. When her infant dies, she rebuilds her shattered world by hiring herself out as a dairymaid on a farm. There, she meets and falls in love with Angel Clare, a parson's son. They marry and on their wedding night, they share the secrets of their past with one another. Angel expects to be forgiven for his own sinful youth, but he finds he cannot forgive Tess. So begins Thomas Hardy's brilliant novel, a romantic and tragic tale of seduction and betrayal, an indictment of the rigid class system of Victorian England, and an exploration of fate and the inability of humans to control their destiny.
