Edmund White has written several acclaimed novels, including Forgetting Elena and A Boy's Own Story, as well as a collection of short fiction. He is also widely known in the gay community for such works as States of Desire: Travels in Gay America and The Joy of Gay Sex, which he called his moment of personal liberation as a homosexual. This 1989 interview contains some of the most open, frank, and detailed commentary on how a particular writer actually thinks and works. In addition to being highly articulate about both the art and craft of fiction, White is a sensitive, urbane, and compassionate man with much to say about working under the specter of AIDS, the impact of his homosexuality on his work, and why he remains somewhat unknown in America, despite his fame abroad.
