On January 15, 1953, President Harry Truman gave his farewell address, remarking on a presidency challenged by both war and cold war. Truman ordered the dropping of the first atomic bombs, witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations, proposed a radical social program that became known as the Fair Deal, and led a struggle against Communist North Korea. Truman became the 33rd president in 1945 when FDR died unexpectedly while in office.
