On March 17, 1954, St. Patrick's Day, Senator Joseph McCarthy addressed the Irish Fellowship Club on the threat of communism. He claims that a war declared by Karl Marx 100 years before, and later resurrected by Lenin and Stalin, is once again being waged, this time by the Russian Kremlin. At the time, McCarthy and his chief counsel, Roy M. Cohn, were under growing attack by CBS commentator Edward R. Murrow, the Army, and Democrats on his investigations subcommittee. McCarthy was accused of engaging in half-truths and confusing the public about the threat of communism.
