On January 25, 1974, California Governor Ronald Reagan made his famous "Young Americans for Freedom Address." That same year, as his second gubernatorial term was nearing its end, the Republican Party urged their favorite son to become a presidential candidate. This mission, however, would not be accomplished until 1980. In that year's election, Reagan defeated incumbent Democrat Jimmy Carter and became the 40th President of the United States.
