On October 12, 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave this Fireside Chat on legislation to be recommended to the extraordinary session of the Congress. He tells American citizens to not consider his actions "bad business," adding that "those who do not like democracy want to keep the legislators at home," and that "democratic government can never be considered an intruder into the affairs of a democratic nation." FDR began his Fireside Chats while he was Governor of New York and continued them on a national level after he was elected president in 1932.
