On September 3, 1939, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain declared that Great Britain and France would go to war against Germany. "We shall be fighting against brute force," he added referring to Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. The declaration came following Germany's invasion of Poland. The French and British governments issued an ultimatum to Hitler, "Suspend all aggressive action against Poland (and) withdraw forces from Polish territory" or the United and Kingdom and France, "in fulfillment of our obligations, will come to Poland's assistance." This declaration marks the beginning of the Second World War.
