On July 15, 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts launches what he calls his "New Frontier" in his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for president. Kennedy speaks to the final convention session in Los Angles about moving beyond the New Freedom and New Deal of past Democratic administrations and calls the New Frontier "not a set of promises" but "a set of challenges." The young senator surprised his party on this day by choosing Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas as his vice-presidential running mate. Senator Johnson had campaigned vigorously against Kennedy for the top spot on the ticket.
