On August 8, 1974, President Richard M. Nixon became the first president in U.S. history to resign from office. The president faced impeachment in Congress for his involvement in the Watergate scandal. Nixon, speaking from the Oval Office, expresses his sadness and regret and apologizes for his poor judgment. He concedes that he no longer has the votes to avoid impeachment and that to continue to fight for personal vindication would not be in the best interests of the country.
