On March 31, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson announced that he would not run again. "I shall not seek and I will not accept the nomination of my party as your president," Johnson said following a nationally televised address on the war in Vietnam. His decision shocked his supporters as well as his opponents. But it signified his acknowledgment that there was "division in the American house" and that his handling of the war in Vietnam was exceedingly unpopular with the American people.
