On August 12, 1987, after 9 months of investigations and hearings surrounding the Iran-Contra scandal, President Ronald Reagan addressed the American public. In this speech, he apologizes for his involvement in the arms-for-hostages deal and takes responsibility for the diversion of funds to the Nicaraguan Congress, saying that "no president should ever be protected from the truth." Reagan also discusses new policies regarding covert operations and the issues his administration will focus on in the remaining 17 months of his term as president.
