On January 17, 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave his farewell speech, warning the nation against a growing "military-industrial complex." He provides further caution from the potential of misplaced power and the scientific-technological elite and advocates the decentralization of federal control of research. Eisenhower concludes with a prayer that "people of all faiths, all races, all nations" might live together in "mutual respect and love."
