Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Dillard says that "Total Eclipse" presented her with the most interesting technical problem she has ever faced - how to set up, "narratively," less than one minute of actual experience. Taking her lead from Faulkner's As I Lay Dying, she decided to retell one moment of experience over and over again, through differing layers of consciousness. This was a particularly appropriate approach because consciousness, and the dangers of dabbling in the irrational, are the true subjects of this essay. Here Dillard reads this intriguing work taken from from her collection entitled Teaching a Stone to Talk.
